"Indian clubs are an ancient fitness tool going back many centuries.  The British brought them back from India in the 19th century.  They were popular in the United States into the 1930's.  They are being reintroduced into fitness culture by Pavel Tsatsouline, who has become one of the top fitness gurus of our time.  Pavel is best known for repopularizing Russian Kettlebells.  He is the most physically fit person I know of in terms of combined strength and flexibility.  He is a serious fitness expert who doesn't take himself too seriously.  His tongue-in-cheek references to the (Communist) Party (you can buy a 'Join The Party' t-shirt on his website) and his hypermacho posturing led my wife to ask if I was watching an old Saturday Night Live rerun when I was viewing one of his videos.  'Comrade, try this one.  It'll make you chuck up a lung!'  That's just marketing and showmanship.  If followed properly, his methods are very safe and very effective.  He is an impressive teacher.

I bought a pair of 1lb. Indian Clubs a couple of weeks ago and have mastered one of the routines demonstrated by Dr. Ed Thomas in Lesson One of the excellent DVD that comes with the clubs.  (The DVD is a must!)  Even five minutes with these light clubs loosens up the shoulder girdle, neck, upper back, and chest.  As it says on the website:

Indian Club Swinging Exercises—in just minutes a day—WILL:

  • Strengthen your back, shoulders, pecs, biceps, triceps, forearms, grip—and most importantly—your connective tissue, ligaments and tendons
  • Enhance your shoulder efficiency, mobility, elbow and wrist flexibility—and range of motion
  • Develop your grace, coordination, balance and agility
  • Counteract the negative impact of too many hours sitting hunched at a computer keyboard

It's easy and fun.  I recommend them for all ages."
