What's Keeping You From Sleeping May Surprise You

Posted on 08-22-2014

Do you find it difficult to get a good night's sleep? Do you wake up in the middle of the night and find it hard to go back to sleep? Although there are many causes for this, here is one that your chiropractor, and only your chiropractor, can help you with. The nerve endings that send the signals that your brain interprets as pain, also connect with the part of your brain that wakes you up. This connection makes sense in evolutionary terms because if something starts to make a meal out of you, you don't want to sleep through it. I have heard many times: "The pain wakes me up at night". Seems obvious, right? Here is the interesting part: Those signals do not necessarily reach the cortex of your brain where conscious though takes place. If they do not reach the cortex, you do not feel pain from these signals, but are woken up when they stimulate the "waking up" (RAS) part of the brain. So, pain or not, stimulation of these nerve endings (nociceptors) could be the cause of your poor sleep.

I often have patients tell me that they are sleeping better since getting chiropractic adjustments. Those nerve endings I spoke about are stimulated by the constant pressure that builds up (painful or not) from spinal (or other) joints not moving normally. Chiropractic adjustments get the joints moving again, turning off those signals that wake you up when you should be sleeping.

Remember: With all health problems, you haven't tried everything until you have tried chiropractic. Better yet, if you want to live a life free of the side-effects of drugs, TRY CHIROPRACTIC FIRST!

Life Is The Expression Of Spirit Through Matter

Posted on 09-30-2013

Daniel David Palmer discovered Chiropractic in 1895. It is a science, art, and philosophy of health. These days, the science and art are stressed and the vitalistic philosophy eschewed. Chiropractic philosophy is very simple as explained by Dr. Palmer: There is a Universal Intelligence (the mind of God, if you will) that expresses itself through the material universe. Each living thing is imbued with that intelligence which he called the Innate Intelligence of the body. In the human, the seat of Innate Intelligence is the brain which extends through the center of the spine and out between the vertebrae to every organ and tissue in the body where it exerts overriding control over them. The Intelligence is perfect but the material is not. So, according to Dr. Palmer, the job of the chiropractor is to assist the spirit to manifest in the material world. Deep.

The Fork In The Road

Posted on 09-30-2013

One of life's ironies is that the older we get, the more important it is to exercise and the less inclined we are to do so. The difference between an older person in his or her 80's who lives independently and those who require significant assistance is often exercise. All other things being equal, those who have exercised regularly from an early age are much more likely to live independently in old age. Every day we come to a fork in the road. One leads to health, strength, and vitality. The other to sickness and decrepitude. We owe it not only to ourselves, but to our children and their children to remain as healthy and independent as possible for as long as possible. Living a healthy lifestyle is not only a smart thing to do. It is the right thing to do.

Pay Yourself First

Posted on 09-30-2013

A typical conversation in my office goes like this: "Have you been doing the exercises I gave you?" "Not as much as I should." "So that means over the past month, you have done them once." (I figured this out from years of experience.) "No, more than that." "Twice?"

Then we both laugh. NOT ENOUGH TIME is the biggest excuse people give for not taking care of themselves. We are all busy. Often too busy. The old adage "Pay yourself first" if you want to save money because you will spend it otherwise also applies to time. (Time is money, right?) If you do not make taking care of yourself a priority, your time will be spent (squandered?) on other things.

This applies even more to those who have others depending on them. You will not be able to care care of anyone else, if you don't take care of yourself. That's why you are instructed to put on YOUR oxygen mask first in an emergency on an airplane. You cannot take care of your kids if you are unconscious. Likewise, if you are unconscious with regard to your health you are not going to help anyone, including yourself. So, budget the time to prepare healthy meals and to exercise EVERY DAY.
